Seven horses who sold at Keeneland, including three graduates of the 2016 September Yearling Sale, or raced or trained here during the 2017 Fall Meet scored victories during the 34th Breeders’ Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Del Mar.
Smith, Magnier and Tabor’s Mendelssohn, who sold for $3 million to top the 2016 September Sale, captured the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).
Mendelssohn, a 2-year-old son of Scat Daddy trained by Aiden O’Brien, is a half-brother to multiple champion and three-time Breeders’ Cup winner Beholder and successful sire Into Mischief. With Ryan Moore aboard in the colt’s North American debut, Mendelssohn was the 4-1 favorite for the 1-mile race that he won by a length from fellow September Sale graduate Untamed Domain.
M.V. Magnier purchased Mendelssohn from breeder Clarkland Farm.
Mendelssohn’s half-sister Victory Party, by Yankee Victor, is consigned to Keeneland’s 2017 November Breeding Stock Sale by Denali Stud, agent. Cataloged as Hip 364, the 11-year-old mare is in foal to Curlin. The November Sale begins Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Two colts by Curlin who are graduates of the same September Sale finished 1-2 in the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). The winner, Good Magic, scored his first career win when he defeated Solomini.
Bob Edwards’ eFive Racing, which owns Good Magic in partnership with breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbreds, purchased him for $1 million from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent. Jose Ortiz rode the winner for trainer Chad Brown.
Hill ‘n’ Dale also consigned Solomini, sold to Zayat Stables for $270,000.
Caledonia Road and Alluring Star – two fillies sold at the 2016 September Sale – finished 1-2 in the $2 million 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
The winner, ridden by Mike Smith, sold for $140,000 to trainer Ralph Nicks, agent for co-owner Zoom and Fish Stable. Eaton Sales, agent, consigned the Quality Road filly, who also races for Charlie Spiring and Newtown Anner Stud.
Woods Edge Farm, agent, consigned Alluring Star, purchased by Bradley Thoroughbreds, agent, for $125,000.
Caledonia Road selling at Keeneland
The other Keeneland sales graduate who won a Breeders’ Cup race was Roy H, winner of the $1.5 million TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). The 5-year-old More Than Ready gelding is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Consigned to the 2013 September Sale by Claiborne Farm, agent, he sold to Ciaran Dunne for $115,000.
Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, agent, consigned Roy H to the 2014 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where Rockingham Ranch bought him for $310,000. Rockingham owns the gelding, trained by Peter Miller, in partnership with David Bernsen.
Also representing Keeneland were three Breeders’ Cup winners who raced or trained here during the Fall Meet in October.
eFive Racing Thoroughbred’s Rushing Fall earned her way into the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) by winning Keeneland’s JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G3) on Oct. 11. She remained here after that win and worked 4 furlongs on Oct. 27 before leaving for Del Mar. Ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Chad Brown, the 2-year-old More Than Ready filly won the Juvenile Fillies Turf to stay undefeated in three races.
Bar of Gold won the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) at odds of 66-1 following her sixth-place finish in the Juddmonte Spinster (G1) on Oct. 8. John Kimmel trains the 5-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., for breeders Chester and Mary Broman.
Godolphin Stable Lessee’s Wuheida (GB), winner of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G2), was to run in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane’s End (G1) on Oct. 14 but was scratched because of a minor foot injury. The 3-year-old Dubawi filly, conditioned by Charles Appleby, worked 5 furlongs over the turf course on Oct. 24 before leaving for Del Mar. She was ridden to victory by William Buick.
