The “Friend of Kentucky Cities” award is given by the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) to legislators who perform outstanding work in the legislature advocating for issues that impact cities across the state.

“I am honored to receive the 2017 Friend of Kentucky Cities Award from the Kentucky League of Cities,” said Rep. Koenig. “I am proud to support legislation that allows cities to protect their citizens, while also making their lives better in the process. I will continue to be a champion of home rule and look forward to doing so in the upcoming legislative session and beyond.”

The Kentucky League of Cities has focused for several years on the need to repeal the state’s prevailing wage requirement. Representative Koenig cosponsored House Bill 3 in the 2017 Regular Session of the General Assembly which amends and repeals various Kentucky statutes relating to wages and hours to abolish prevailing wage requirements.

Amending Kentucky’s alcoholic beverage control statutes was also a top priority for KLC in 2017. Kentucky League of Cities Deputy Executive Director J.D. Chaney heralded Representative Koenig’s House Bill 183, which gave cities more control over alcohol sales within city limits.

“Representative Koenig’s bill goes a long way toward granting local elected officials the right to decide when and where alcohol can be sold in their communities,” said Chaney. “He also sponsored House Bill 296 to amend the state’s workers’ compensation law and House Bill 160 to give cities the right to suspend the powers of constables within their city limits if they so choose. He is a strong advocate for legislation that puts local officials in control of local issues.”

KLC Executive Director/CEO Jonathan Steiner said the organization looks forward to working with Koenig again in the upcoming session.

“We appreciate his willingness to tackle the tough issues facing Kentucky cities. His dedication to home rule makes him more than worthy of this award,” Steiner said.

Founded in 1927, the Kentucky League of Cities is a membership association of more than 370 cities across the commonwealth.  KLC has offices in Lexington and Frankfort and provides cities, leaders and employees with several services, including legislative advocacy, legal services, financial services, community consulting,
