Kentucky awarded $2 million in federal grants to expand workforce, education data collection

The Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics (KCEWS) has been awarded two federal grants totaling $2 million to expand and align data collection to improve education and workforce programs.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded a three-year Workforce Data Quality Initiative grant totaling $1 million to KCEWS to enhance the Kentucky Longitudinal Data System (KLDS). KCEWS will administer the grant with Kentucky’s Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC) to expand the breadth of workforce data and increase capacity to align education with additional workforce data in the KLDS. Kentucky was one of six states chosen to receive the grant.

KLDS is a statewide repository that captures and analyzes data on students from preschool through postsecondary education and the workforce so Kentucky can make improvements to education and workforce training and monitor those changes over time.

In addition, KCEWS received a three-year U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Data and Technical Assistance (DATA) grant totaling $1 million. KCEWS will administer the grant with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) to meet Kentucky’s goal of measuring the impact of the employment and training programs and identify effective strategies for the alignment between social service, workforce and education programs.

“We are excited to receive this three year grant,” said Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) Commissioner Adria Johnson. “This will help us meet our goal of measuring the impact of the employment and training programs and identify effective strategies for the alignment between social services, workforce and education programs.”

KCEWS collects and links data to evaluate education and workforce efforts in the Commonwealth. This includes developing reports, responding to research requests, and providing statistical data about these efforts so policymakers, agencies, and the public can make better-informed decisions.
