BCPL events include recognition of veterans in Union, Native American celebration in Burlington


The Boone County Public Library offers a wide range of events, activities and programs for adults at its branches throughout the month of November.

Programs at the Scheben Branch in Union will focus on America’s military as BCPL recognizes  Veterans Day. The Scheben Branch invites visitors to hang a star in honor of those who have served or who are serving in the armed services throughout the month. There is also an opportunity to sign a Christmas card for the City of Union’s adopted military unit of soldiers in the HHT, 1-32 CAV, 1 BCT, 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Unit based at Fort Campbell. The branch will also offer a “Healing the Wounds of War: Soldiers, Veterans, Families and Civilians,” program on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Main Library in Burlington will present “Decades Behind Bars: A Conversation with Gaye D. Holman.”  The program will feature a community conversation about the policy of long-term incarceration, with Holman, a retired professor of sociology who taught with¬in correctional facilities in Louisville.

Also at the Main Library, the popular Native American Heritage Celebration returns on Saturday, Nov. 18. The program celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Native Americans that have inhabited Northern Kentucky throughout the region’s history.

Of the many consequences of war, PTSD and Moral Injury affect the hu¬man soul. As individuals and our so¬ciety as a whole, we need to find a path of wisdom and wholeness for healing to rebuild our lives. This presentation highlights the powerful work of Ed Tick, Ph.D., creator of the Soldier’s Heart program. The discussion led by Nonie Muller will be guided by his book, Warrior’s Return: Restoring the Soul After War (no reading required to attend).

Decades Behind Bars: A Conversation with Gaye D. Holman

Join us for a community conversation about the policy of long-term incarceration, its effects on inmates and the external community, and possible improvements in the criminal justice system with Gaye D. Holman, a retired professor of sociology who taught within correctional facilities in Louisville, KY for several decades. Beginning in 1994, Holman recorded the personal stories of 50 men incarcerated in Ken¬tucky prisons. She finished her work in 2014 with the 17 men remaining incarcerated for over two decades and included input from correctional officers, prison administrators, chaplains, and parole board members.

John Uri Lloyd: American Pharmacist

Learn the story of John Uri Lloyd, considered one of the most important pharmacists of his time. Along with his brothers, John Uri Lloyd developed Lloyd Brothers, Pharmacists, Inc. Also an author, Uri wrote a series of local description novels about the Northern Kentucky area. Presented by the Lloyd Library & Museum, which was established through a trust set up by John and his brothers. Program is co-sponsored by the Boone County Historical Society.

Native American Heritage Celebration

Celebrate diverse cultures, traditions, and histories. Coming to us from Rhode Island, The Eastern Medicine Singers will drum, dance and sing in the Eastern Woodlands style used by many of Kentucky’s Native American tribes. You’ll find them on the second floor in the large meeting room. They will perform throughout the entire event, with a couple of breaks. Also performing, Native American ceremonial singer Brian Miller will sing, play the flute and share stories under the dome on the first floor at noon. Brian’s heritage is Quawpaw and Cherokee but he has been adopted into the Oglala Lakota nation. He is a sacred fire chief for his tribe and a traditional pow-wow dancer. Children will have fun making lego-stamped maize, dream catchers, rain sticks, and headbands in the Family Activity Center on the second floor. They’ll also enjoy hearing Native American stories on the second floor, by the dome. They can hear: Raven at 12:45 p.m. and Arrow to the Sun at 1:45 p.m. Explore a tipi exhibition, by Tim Deane, on the library’s lawn and watch a flintknapping demonstration by the Anthropolgy Department of Northern Kentucky University. Flintknapping is the process of chipping away material from high silica stones to make tools with sharp points, such as arrowheads. The Anthropology Department will also demonstrate how to use an atlatl — a Native American hunting tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in spear-throwing. Downstairs, Battaglia Deli and Café will offer a special menu with Native American dishes.
