Woman charged for leaving child in hot car at Florence Mall, police say temp reached 105 inside

A Newport woman has been charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree for allegedly leaving her child in a hot car in the Florence Mall parking lot Thursday.

Florence Police say Chistina Krups, 29, left the child, who was sleeping, unattended in the car for at least 10 to 15 minutes. The outside temperature was 83 degrees, while the temperature inside the car was a sweltering 105 degrees.

The windows were reportedly down about an inch. The child was perspiring and had red cheeks, but did not require medical attention once awakened. The one-year-old was released into the custody of her father and Krups was transported to the Boone County Detention Center.

The Florence Police Department released the following statement regarding the incident:

On 09/20/17 the Florence Police Department was dispatched to Lot B of the Florence Mall for a child left unattended in a vehicle. When officers arrived on scene they located a group of people standing around a 2015 BMW SUV. There was a sleeping child in a car seat. The vehicle was locked and the windows were down about an inch.

As the officers attempted to gain entry into the vehicle the mother of the child exited the Mall and unlocked the car doors with a remote. The one year old child was still sleeping, had red cheeks, and was sweating. The child once awake did not need any further medical assistance and was released to the care of the father. Further investigation revealed that the child was left unattended in the vehicle for at least ten to fifteen minutes. The temperature outside at the time was 83 degrees F. A check of the temperature inside of the vehicle by performed by Mall Security was 105 degrees F.

The following individual was charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st degree and transported to the Boone County Detention Center:

Christina Krups, 29 years old, Newport, KY
