Simon Kenton and Beechwood won close games played in the rain on Friday to remain among the undefeated high school football teams in Northern Kentucky.

Simon Kenton senior quarterback Matt Shearer scored both of his team’s touchdowns in a 13-6 win over Conner that raised the Pioneers’ record to 3-0.

In the second quarter, Conner took a 6-0 lead on senior running back Matt Simpson’s 1-yard run into the end zone.  Simon Kenton tied the score on a 6-yard touchdown run by Shearer before halftime.

Shearer scored on another 6-yard run in the third quarter to give the Pioneers a 13-6 lead and neither team was able to score on the rain-soaked natural grass field the rest of the night. The Cougars had two turnovers and the Pioneers had one during the game.

Shearer rushed for 86 yards and completed 3 of 8 passes for 34 yards to account for 120 of his team’s 187 total yards. Conner had 97 yards rushing and 45 passing for a 145 total. Simpson finished with 100 all-purpose yards — 46 rushing, 3 receiving and 51 in punt and kickoff returns.

Beechwood edged Somerset, 7-0, with the game’s only touchdown coming with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter. After the Tigers blocked a punt to get the ball on the 12-yard line, junior Logan Castleman scored on a 6-yard run.

In the final minutes, Somerset moved the ball to the 30-yard line, but Beechwood intercepted a pass to clinch its first shutout of the season. Last year, the Tigers posted four shutouts with two coming during their 5-0 run in the Class 1A playoffs that ended with a state title.

Covington Catholic, Ryle and Walton-Verona were the other local teams that posted shutouts on Friday.

Despite the weather conditions, CovCath had another high-scoring game in a 41-0 win over Cooper. The Colonels have now scored 138 points in their first three games for a 46.0 average.

Campbell County also moved the ball well in a 35-7 win over Newport Central Catholic. The Camels were averaging 403 yards per game coming into Friday’s match-up.
