Newport Fire/EMS Chief Bill Darin will be hosting a “Push-In” Ceremony on Tuesday, September 26th at 9 a.m. for a 2017 Pierce Fire Engine truck at Fire Station #2.
Fire Station #2 is located in South Newport and has significant height and length restrictions. The Pierce unit was specially designed and engineered to fit into Station #2 and is replacing a 1989 engine.
The purchase is the result of a $500,000 FEMA grant with the city portion costing $23,809. The unit is a state of the art engine, which will pump 1500 gallons per minute and holds 500 gallons of water. The unit will be operated by one Lieutenant, one Engineer and one Firefighter.
The unit is capable of providing advanced life support emergency medical services to Newport residents. The unit was designed by a committee consisting of Captain Rich Klaserner, Lt. Ryan Lange, Lt. Chuck Dietz, Engineer Jeff Stahl, Engineer Nick Brown and Chief Bill Darin.
The Newport Fire/EMS Department has served the ever-growing City of Newport since 1854 when the first volunteer fire company was established through incorporation. The Fire Department has been an all career department since 1868 when the City of Newport passed an ordinance that created the first steam fire engine company.
The mission of the Newport Fire/EMS Department is to protect the citizens within the City of Newport from injury and loss of life and/or property due to natural or man-made disasters by providing highly trained and equipped personnel to respond to incidents of fire, flood, chemical release and medical emergencies within a three-minute response time after notification.
Both Newport Fire/EMS stations are open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
The “Push-In” Ceremony is open to the public and free to attend.
