A man whose foolish gunplay while high on marijuana resulted in the death of a friend could spend the next five years in jail.

Gray

On June 18, police say Dhezon D. Gray was smoking marijuana with Zachary Pouncy and two other individuals, while listening to music at a residence on West 26th Street in Covington.

Gray, 21, admitted to loading a round into the chamber of the gun and continuing to wave it around. With a finger on the trigger, Gray put the gun down on a table, causing it to fire. The round struck Pouncy in the chest, killing him.

There was no evidence to suggest Gray intentionally shot Pouncy.

“This was a very sad example of what should be obvious – guns and drugs don’t mix,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders.

Thursday, Gray, of Covington, pleaded guilty to Manslaughter 2nd Degree for the shooting.

Sanders is recommending a five-year prison sentence. Gray will appear before Kenton Circuit Court Judge Gregory Bartlett in Courtroom 7A for formal, final sentencing on October 30, 2017 at 9 a.m.

The defendant and the deceased were friends.

“Everyone spoke highly of both young men, but when you do something stupid and kill someone, there must be accountability,” said Sanders. “It’s just a shame that smoking dope cost one man his freedom, and the other man, his life.”
