Kenton County Public Libraries to hold 31 days of local history, genealogy through October


What could be better than a pumpkin spice or chai latte every day before Halloween? Thirty-one days of programs brought to you by your local history and genealogy library friends.

Starting October 1 the Kenton County Public Libraries kick off 31 days of programming.

Grab your rain coat and walking shoes because couldn’t contain all of the fun to inside the library! The events include a whole bunch of fresh, new-to-us topics.

Head out into our beautiful city to explore the iconography of headstones in Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum and have a picnic amongst the cemetery’s residents.

If you are sad to see the weekly walking tours of historic Pike Street come to an end, have no fear! Take a brand new tour filled with spooky, grim, or otherwise unusual stories from the Historic Licking Riverside Neighborhood. On Mondays, October 9 and 30 at 6 p.m., and Wednesdays, October 4 and 25 at 10 a.m. for an hour-long jaunt through the neighborhood with a side of storytelling.

As a super special bonus, there’s another installment of the tour on Saturday, October 21 at 3:30 pm before the annual Evening with the Ancestors event.

Enjoy family-friendly tours of Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum on Friday, October 13, while waiting for Cinema in the Cemetery to start (presented in partnership with The Neighborhood of Peaselburg, The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington, Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum and the City of Covington Parks and Recreation).

Take a stroll through the historic streets of Ludlow, in addition to talking about the history of funeral homes in Covington.

Of course you won’t want to miss the regular monthly series of broadcasts: Explain It Like I’m Five (ELI5), Today I Learned (TIL), and Glitter, Glue & Genealogy, Too (3G2)!

Speaking of geography, do you like maps? Share in Latitude, Longitude, and Lineage and explore different kinds of historic maps that can be used in genealogical research.

• Genealogy Workshop with Amy Johnson Crow, CG – Saturday, October 7 from 10-4 p,m.
It will cover occupational resources, utilizing timelines in research, locating ancestors prior to 1850, and records for researching your Civil War veterans. Bring a lunch because this one is going to go all day!

• Probate Record Series – Join us on Thursday nights October 5, 12, and 19 at 6 p.m. for beginner’s help finding different types of probate records in our appropriately titled events:

◦ Put a Ring On It – Find your Northern Kentucky ancestors marriage records;

◦ You Make Me Feel Like a Natural-ized Woman – for assistance finding naturalization records in Northern Kentucky;

◦ Don’t Fear the Reaper – finding death records in Northern Kentucky.

• She’s a Brick House – Sign up for a one-on-one session and get help starting on researching your historic Northern Kentucky property.

• Family History Zine Workshop – Learn how to create a DIY family history “magazine” with a photocopier, scissors, tape, and a bit of creativity.

And of course there will be a few crowd favorites, such as our annual Antiques Appraisal Fair sponsored by the Kenton County Historical Society and bi-annual Evening with the Ancestors.
