John Schickel: A grand idea has emerged, so you are invited to our field trip to Frankfort Oct. 19

Last Wednesday was our Boone County Senior Citizens’ Picnic. This annual event was started years ago by the much-beloved former commissioner, Irene Patrick, with a potluck at her home in Hebron for seniors. Today, this is a huge event which is held each September at the Boone County Fairgrounds and organized by the Boone County Fiscal Court.

Companies generously sponsor the event so Boone County taxpayers do not foot the bill.

After the Boone County Fair, this is probably my favorite event because I get to talk to so many folks whom I do not often see. I have been attending this event since 1985 and I have never missed a year. The only difference is now I am a senior, and we enjoy this great celebration together.

Two things I heard over and over again at the picnic was how much you enjoy reading these columns and how many of you enjoyed the adult field trips which I organized to Frankfort in past years. Leonard Bernstein once said two things are necessary to accomplish something great: A great idea, and not quite enough time.

This is mine: I decided to organize a trip and the date is set for Thursday, October 19.

We will use the same format we have used in previous years that has worked so well.

We will leave the St. Timothy Church parking lot (the lot near the rectory) promptly at 8 a.m. and carpool to Frankfort. We will organize it so those who do not want to drive can ride with others. This format has always worked well in the past. As your state senator, I plan on being with you every step of the way from the time we leave St. Timothy’s parking lot.

Our first stop on the tour will be Kentucky’s beautiful Governor’s Mansion with its fine artwork and beautiful gardens. Hopefully, the Governor or his chief of staff will have time to meet with the group for a picture.

We will then have lunch in the Education Center—and remember, this is a field trip, so do not forget to pack a lunch! In the past people have brought items to share and lunches turned out to be quite a feast.

In the afternoon we will tour the beautiful State Capitol, the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court Chambers, and get a visit from our Senate President Robert Stivers. We will then proceed to the Kentucky History Center to learn about Kentucky’s fascinating history.

After that final tour, we will depart back for Northern Kentucky and be back home before 5 p.m., just in time for supper.

Please note that you must RSVP in order to attend. These trips have been very popular in the past, and we will only be taking a maximum of 45 people. If you are interested in attending, I urge you to RSVP to Kathy Lewis at 502-564-8100, Ext. 778, or email her at Kathy.Lewis@LRC.KY.GOV as soon as possible. I look forward to welcoming you all to Frankfort.
