Discover the mysteries of the ocean’s greatest depths in Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss on display at the Main Library, 1786 Burlington Pike, in Burlington, from October 1 to January 7.

Explore newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, shipwrecks, and close-up views from deep-sea research submersibles. “Fly” a remotely operated vehicle over a virtual model of the Titanic‘s deck and observe firsthand the technology that has allowed explorers to travel to the ocean floor through the recreation of the interior of an Alvin personnel sphere.

Complete a checklist of tasks to prepare Alvin for a dive. Watch through a 4-inch viewport window–just like Alvin’s window–as you attempt to operate Alvin’s robotic arm to pick up lava rocks and clams from the sea floor. It’s not as easy as it looks!

Extreme Deep introduces us to the critical role that biology, chemistry, geology, history, exploration and technology play in understanding our world and its future.

This exhibition is recommended for ages nine and up. There are three interactive elements, standing exhibits and multiple video stations in this 4,000 square ft. display. The exhibit begins as you walk through the front door of the library and is spread throughout the first floors. Some of the exhibit elements, of interest to a younger audience, are located in the computer lab on first floor. Teacher packets are available at www.bcpl.org and, as always, class visits are welcome.

Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss at Boone County Public Library is sponsored by Duke Energy.
