Woman killed in accidental shooting on Holman Street in Covington was Newport Schools teacher

Covington Police have identified the woman killed in a shooting in the 1800 block of Holman Street in Covington.

Kelly Cocagne, 35, was shot at her residence in what Covington Police say is being investigated as an accidental shooting.

According to a statement from Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton, Cocagne was about to start a career in education there.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out tonight to the loved ones of Kelly Cocagne, a bright and inspiring young woman who was just beginning her career in education,” Middleton said in a statement. “Our entire Newport Independent Schools family – teachers, students, staff and parents – mourn this senseless tragedy. Kelly was a dedicated professional and tremendous person who will be deeply missed.”

In a statement released Tuesday, police say Cocagne was shot in the torso and was transported to University Hospital in Cincinnati, where she was pronounced dead. All parties in the case have been interviewed, but police say given the nature of the incident and the ages of the those involved, additional names will not be released.

Covington Police issued the following statement regarding the incident:

On Monday, August 14th, 2017 at approximately 1310 hours, the Covington Police responded to a call at 1840 Holman for a report of a shooting. Once on scene officers discovered that a woman inside the residence had been shot once in the torso area. The woman has been identified as 35 year old Kelly Cocagne of the same residence. Ms. Cocagne was transported to UC Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.
All parties involved in this case are believed to have been identified and interviewed. Given the age and circumstances of this incident their names will not be released at this time.
The Covington Police have been working very closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office on this case and barring the discovery of any new information our investigators believe that this shooting was accidental in nature.
