Sule, Alois Alzheimer’s foundations team up to offer ‘Living with Alzheimer’s Disease’ at Beechwood

The 3rd annual Living With Alzheimer’s Disease conference will be held on Saturday, August 26 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Beechwood Independent School, 54 Beechwood Road, Ft. Mitchell.

This free conference will feature nine breakout sessions along with keynote presenter Dr. Rhonna Shatz, DO, from the University of Cincinnati.

Topics to be presented will include informative sessions to help families dealing with a loved one’s disease — Estate Planning, Nutritional Needs, Taking the Guilt Out of Placement, When to Take the Keys Away, Hearing Loss, Financial Planning, Guardianship and Elder Law.

Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy free breakfast and lunch while visiting with exhibitors during the conference who offer products and services related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Marvin Knobloch, director of outreach services with the Alois Alzheimer Foundation in Cincinnati, which works with families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, says the event will be a great day of learning and resources for families.

“We listened to the public, to those who attended the past two conferences, their questions and concerns, the needs that families have, and said we need to know more,” says Knobloch.

Knobloch says they’re excited that the event will take place at Beechwood, and for attendees to hear from Dr. Shatz, who is a specialist in early onset Alzheimer’s, something Knobloch says they’re increasingly seeing at Alois.

“In the 35 years I’ve been doing this, we’re now seeing more of that all the time,” says Knobloch. “I’m now seeing people in their mid to late 40s.”

He attributes the early diagnosis to better knowledge about the disease.

Last year, 150 attended the event and Knobloch says he expects a strong turnout once again.

“Families can still sign up,” he says.

Beechwood School offers ample parking and students will be on hand to assist attendees throughout the facility as needed.

Living With Alzheimer’s Disease conference is sponsored by The Alois Alzheimer Foundation and the Elsa Heisel Sule Foundation whose desire is to provide educational opportunities and assistance to families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

  1. Alzheimer’s patients and families must protect themselves by making sure they’ve properly executed their advance directives so when the time comes that they cannot make decisions for themselves, the person they want making those decisions has been designated as Durable Power of Attorney Agent.

It’s important to not just list one person as Agent, but to also list four or five other people in order of preference to succeed the Agent of first choice should he/she be unable to serve for any reason. If one doesn’t do this, he/she can and likely will be placed in a guardianship.

Guardianship abuse is on the rise. The best way to avoid it is to avoid guardianship. Learn more at NASGA’s website.
