If you are new to the area, one event you will not want to miss is our Boone County 4-H Fair, August 7-12 at the Boone County Fair Grounds: 5819 Idlewild Road, Burlington, KY.
Boone County has a rich agricultural history and this is the perfect opportunity to learn about it. Although many people come for the rides and the cotton candy, my favorite part of the fair is the agricultural and cultural showcase for our community.
It is important to remember that to experience much of the fair’s agricultural activities, the most important time to arrive is during the daytime, as many events begin early in the mornings. One of my favorites is the 4-H Sheep Show, which starts at 8 a.m. Monday, August 7, in the 4-H Livestock Barn. At 1 p.m. on Monday is the 4-H Goat Show, and at 6:45 p.m. Monday is the pig scramble, a favorite of children and adults alike.
Tuesday morning is a big morning for your state senator at the fair, for I will enter my ‘Schickel’s pickles’ in the canned vegetable contest. After a three-year dry-spell from receiving a blue ribbon, I am hopeful for a ribbon in 2017 with a new recipe. I can hardly take the pressure.
Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. is the 4-H Swine Show, and at 6 p.m. is the Miss Sweetheart Pageant (beauty pageant), another popular favorite, in the main show ring.
I plan on being at the fair all week and am looking forward to seeing you there. On Monday, I’ll be working at the Boone County Republican booth. Please stop by and say hello.
You also don’t want to miss the world class horse shows on Thursday and Friday evening, August 10-11, at 8pm in the main show ring.
As a side note – a project I’ve been working on with the Kentucky Department of Transportation, the Boone County Fiscal Court, and the Boone County School District – is a left-turn lane on KY-237 in front of the Boone County school bus lot. This additional lane is desperately needed for busses to get off of this road in a safe manner to return to the bus lot. I am happy to report that the funding has been secured by Governor Bevin’s office, and construction will begin soon. We hope to have the construction completed by Thanksgiving.
