Grant funds awarded for sidewalk, transportation and TANK projects on and around KY 18 in Boone County

Boone County has been awarded federal grants for road, sidewalk and public transportation projects. Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin approved the awards which are part of the Transportation Alternatives Program and the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program.

The intersection of KY 18 and Limaburg Road in Boone County will be the focus of projects completed using Federal grant funds (Google maps).

As a result of the awards, the intersection from Limaburg Road to KY 18 (Burlington Pike) will be widened to allow for additional vehicles to flow through the intersection from Limaburg south to KY 18.

A multimodal path will be constructed along KY 18 connecting the sidewalk system from Burlington all the way to Aero Parkway. The Transportation Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) was awarded a grant to pilot a program bringing public transportation to the County Seat in Burlington.

“I am very excited about the projects funded in Boone County,” said Judge/Executive Gary Moore. “They will help alleviate congestion, complete pedestrian connections and provide public transportation along the very busy KY 18 corridor. I thank Governor Bevin for giving strong consideration to our grant applications and for investing in Boone County.”

This year, TAP funding for 34 projects was awarded to 28 counties while 10 CMAQ projects in various municipalities were selected. TAP assists communities in funding transportation improvements, such as safe bicycle and pedestrian pathways and/or facilities, safe routes to schools, scenic turnouts and overlooks and other investments. Funding for TAP is authorized as a set-aside of the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funding program under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which authorizes federal transportation funding from Fiscal Year 2016-2020.

CMAQ is a transportation improvement program focused on funding innovative transportation projects or programs that will reduce congestion and improve air quality. Kentucky receives CMAQ funds each year which can only be spent in areas designated as non-attainment or maintenance for the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Boone County is now a U.S. Flag disposal location

As part of a new national campaign, by National Association of Counties (NACo) to support flag etiquette, the Boone County Judge Executive’s Office has installed an official U.S. flag disposal box at the County Administration building.

This box will provide residents with a location to drop off their old, tattered and torn flags for a proper, dignified retirement for each U.S. flag. The County has partnered with Boy Scout Troop 805, 1, and 727 to pick up the flags and executive proper U.S flag retirement ceremonies.
