Fields began his career with the City of Erlanger in August 1986 as a police officer. He rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police in December 2002. He served in that capacity until being named City Administrator on October 1, 2013.

In a letter to City staff, Fields summed up what he described as a difficult decision:

“After a long period of soul searching and consideration, I have come to the decision to retire from the City of Erlanger on September 1, 2017. I have had the distinct pleasure of serving you and this great city for 31 years. Never in my wildest dreams would I have predicted my career path and I sincerely thank each of you that have played a role in it. My career would not have been possible without the hard work and support of each person I have had the honor to serve with.

It is now time for me to move on to other ventures. In leaving, I wish you and the city continued success. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.”

Erlanger Mayor Tyson Hermes said Fields is widely respected in the region for his expertise in Dispatch, and City Administration.
“Marc Fields has been a longtime member of the Erlanger family,” Hermes said. “While we will miss his institutional knowledge, we wish him enjoyment and success in his retirement.  We will start the process of finding his replacement immediately.”

Fields is a native of Northern Kentucky and has resided in the City of Erlanger for the past 25 years with his family. He has served on many regional committees and has held office in numerous regional organizations.
