Elsa Heisel Sule to be posthumously inducted into the Holmes High School Hall of Distinction

A bomber pilot, a doctor, a philanthropist, a lawyer and a public relations expert will be inducted into the Holmes High School Hall of Distinction this year.

The hall was established in 2000 to honor distinguished graduates and/or friends of Covington Schools for their achievements and contributions to society.

The winners will be recognized during the Hall of Honors event at 6 p.m., June 14, at the Drees Pavilion.

In the days leading up to the event, the Tribune will recognize each of the Covington Education Hall of Honors winners with a profile of accomplishments and contributions.

Hall of Distinction Inductee Elsa Heisel Sule

Elsa Heisel Sule

The late Elsa Heisel Sule was a contemporary at Holmes of another of tonight’s honorees, John H. Klette Jr., and the daughter of Dr. Clifford Newell Heisel and Elsa Groll Heisel.

Ms. Sule, who grew up in the family home on Scott Boulevard, completed her high school studies in 1939, when she graduated No. 2 in her class at Holmes and won National Honor Society recognition. She then went on to the University of Cincinnati, where she earned Phi Beta Kappa honors and a bachelor’s degree in English.

Shortly after completing her college studies, Ms. Sule applied for a job at WSAI radio in Cincinnati and was hired as a script writer for two programs hosted by Ruth Lyons, who became a legendary radio and TV personality and a life-long friend of Ms. Sule.  Over the years she became a VIP in Cincinnati broadcasting at a time when the city was well established for innovation and talent in producing shows for both radio and television.

Today she is remembered for many reasons, including the work of the Elsa Heisel Sule Foundation, based in Ft. Mitchell, which makes grants to nonprofit organizations in fields that include education, health and wellness, scientific research, child welfare, performing arts, public affairs and animal welfare.

The 2017 Hall of Honors winners will be recognized during the celebration event at 6 p.m., June 14, at the Drees Pavilion.  This will mark the first year for the Hall of Honors, which combines the Hall of Distinction and the Covington Education Foundation’s Person of the Year.  The revamped event is designed to honor alumni, celebrate supporters of the school – all while raising funds to support the foundation’s efforts to help students succeed by providing scholarships, paying college fees and assisting with the district’s mentoring program.   Ticket price $55 per person.  Tables and advertisements are also available.
