Dr. Ryan Fischer to be inducted into Holmes High Hall of Distinction as first Outstanding Young Alumnus

A bomber pilot, a doctor, a philanthropist, a lawyer and a public relations expert will be inducted into the Holmes High School Hall of Distinction this year.

The hall was established in 2000 to honor distinguished graduates and/or friends of Covington Schools for their achievements and contributions to society.

The winners will be recognized during the Hall of Honors event at 6 p.m., June 14, at the Drees Pavilion.

In the days leading up to the event, the Tribune will recognize each of the Covington Education Hall of Honors winners with a profile of accomplishments and contributions.

The first person to be recognized by the Covington Education Foundation as an “Outstanding Young Alumnus” is Dr. Ryan Fischer, a third generation Holmes grad who followed in the footsteps of his father Rick and grandmother Peggy.

Dr. Fischer was valedictorian in 2003 and was a four-year letterman in basketball, golf and tennis, garnering all-district and all-region honors in basketball for the district champion bulldogs. He also was a member of the Holmes Academic Team and Governor’s Cup Team, earning state honors in mathematics. Dr. Fischer was a member of the International Baccalaureate program, received the IB diploma and was selected as a National Merit Scholar.

After graduation, he was one of only 20 students awarded a full academic Singletary scholarship to the University of Kentucky, where he went on to graduate summa cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in agricultural biotechnology and biology in 2007. During his senior year, he received the Astronaut Scholarship, given to 15 college students in the nation each year for excellence in science research.

He obtained his medical degree from the University of Kentucky in 2012, graduating with high distinction.

Dr. Fischer currently practices medicine in Lexington as a dermatologist at Dermatology Associates of Kentucky, one of the oldest and largest dermatology practices in the Southeast United States. He also is in the process of starting a free dermatology clinic for underserved populations in Lexington, where he is working with the Salvation Army.

The 2017 Hall of Honors winners will be recognized during the celebration event at 6 p.m., June 14, at the Drees Pavilion.  This will mark the first year for the Hall of Honors, which combines the Hall of Distinction and the Covington Education Foundation’s Person of the Year.  The revamped event is designed to honor alumni, celebrate supporters of the school – all while raising funds to support the foundation’s efforts to help students succeed by providing scholarships, paying college fees and assisting with the district’s mentoring program.   Ticket price $55 per person.  Tables and advertisements are also available.
