Covington seeking feedback on parking plan for MainStrasse during garage construction

The City of Covington is seeking public feedback regarding its recommended 501 Main Parking Mitigation Plan. Feedback for the Board of Commissioners to consider will be solicited until June 19. The Board of Commissioners will formally adopt a mitigation plan at the Legislative meeting on Tuesday, June 27.

By the end of July, 2017, approximately 84 public parking spaces will be impacted during the construction of the 501 Main parking garage in the MainStrasse neighborhood.

In order to try and mitigate the loss of these spaces during construction, the City has developed a proposed parking mitigation plan, featuring the following parking options and final recommendations:

Weekday/Daytime Parking Plan # Spaces
1. Encourage employees to park on the east side of Philadelphia between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. 15
2. Encourage employees and business owners to park along the railroad in the House of Orange lot. 17
3. Make Seventh Street one-way from Main Street to Philadelphia Street 24
4. Make Eighth Street one-way from Philadelphia Street to Main Street 25

Evening/Weekend Parking Plan# Spaces
1. Make Seventh Street one-way from Main Street to Philadelphia Street 24
2. Make Eighth Street one-way from Philadelphia Street to Main Street 25
3. Designs Direct lot ($5 on Friday 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Saturday 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.) 42
4. Encourage employees and owners to park in the IRS lot 28+
5. City/Flaherty and Collins to subsidize valet to allow $3 fee instead of $5 lot, lot will be open to the general public for free as well. 300

In researching various parking options, the City developed its recommendations based upon feedback it had received from Covington businesses and residents. The City also conducted a public meeting to gain further input.
