Bevin orders flags flown at half staff through sunset in honor of former Sen. Bunning, laid to rest today

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Matt Bevin has ordered flags to be lowered to half through sunset on Saturday evening to honor former U. S. Senator Jim Bunning, who passed away last weekend.

Bevin described the northern Kentucky native as “a man who was strong in his faith, strong in his principles, a man who did not move off those principles, a man who did more to change politics than he allowed politics to change him.

“His absence will be felt in the years to come,” Bevin said, “but we are thankful for what he left behind: an incredible legacy of hard work, determination and selflessness.”

After his Hall of Fame baseball career, which included becoming the only man in history to pitch a no-hitter in both the American and National Leagues, Bunning began his public service career, first at the local level, then the Kentucky General Assembly, and wrapping up in Washington, where he served 12 years in the House, and 12 more in the Senate.

Visitation for Bunning, who died at the age of 85 following complications from a stroke he suffered last fall, took place from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Ft. Thomas, Ky.

A mass was held this morning at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Ky., with burial to follow at St. Stephen Cemetery in Ft. Thomas.
