Post-season playoffs in baseball and fast-pitch softball got underway Sunday when Holy Cross defeated Holmes, 17-7, and Beechwood knocked off Covington Latin, 18-1, in the 35th District softball tournament.

The final two games of that district tournament are scheduled on Monday. Beechwood will play Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. and the winner will take on Holy Cross in the championship game at 6 p.m. Both teams in the district final will advance to next week’s 9th Region tournament.

The other big game on Monday’s playoff schedule is Boone County vs. Cooper in the opening game of the 33rd District softball tournament at Conner. The winner will clinch a regional tournament berth and the loser will close out the season.

Cooper (16-14) is averaging 8.4 runs per game with a lineup led by freshman Kayara Suganuma, who has a .563 batting average. Boone County (20-6) has held 17 opponents to two runs or less behind the pitching of junior Olivia Jackson, who has a 16-3 record. One of her wins was a 4-2 decision over Cooper on April 8.

Two baseball teams will impressive records will open the playoffs on Monday when Covington Catholic (25-7) plays Holy Cross in the 35th District and Conner (24-8) faces Boone County in the 33rd District.

Since the winner in each of those games will clinch a berth in next week’s 9th Region tournament, CovCath and Conner will likely have their top pitcher on the mound. CovCath senior Ben France has a 6-1 record and 1.89 earned run average. Conner senior Nick Craddock has a 7-2 record, 0.77 ERA and 94 strike outs.
