Northern Kentucky University has released its 2017 Sustainability Strategy to guide the University’s environmental sustainability initiatives through 2022.
NKU committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 when the University became a signatory of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2007.
The University released a Climate Action Plan in 2010, and the 2017 strategy is the next step toward envisioning and enabling a more sustainable NKU.
“Ten years ago, we committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and our commitment to carbon neutrality was one of the factors that prompted us to draft the 2017 Sustainability Strategy. This document sets the framework for the next five years,” said Tess Phinney, NKU Sustainability Manager.
“We worked with a wide variety of faculty, staff, students, and community members to develop the six goals that will inform our sustainability efforts through the next five years.”
The goals outlined in the 2017 Sustainability Strategy are:
• Demonstrate responsible stewardship of natural resources;
• Empower the campus community to enhance the University’s culture of sustainability;
• Increase and strengthen sustainability education;
• Invest in sustainability;
• Increase participation in, and access to, initiatives that promote social and ecological vitality;
and
• Expand external partnerships that inform NKU sustainability efforts and strengthen our regional impact.
The release of the Sustainability Strategy coincides with the University’s Earth Week celebrations, which began with an Earth Day of Service on April 22 and continues through April 28.
