Newport adds recycling as part of new trash collection service agreement with Rumpke

The City of Newport has added recycling to a new trash collection service agreement with Rumpke Waste and Recycling Services.  The agreement was unanimously approved at the April 24 City Commission meeting.

City-wide residential trash collection will be reduced from two days to one day a week under the agreement, but once-a-week recycling has been added to the service. The contract is effective July 1.

Trash and recycling will be picked up on the same day.

“With city wide recycling, residents will see a big reduction in the amount of trash they generate,” said City Commissioner Beth Fennell.

All residents will receive a green 95-gallon or 65-gallon garbage toter for their trash and a 65-gallon recycling toter. Residents are permitted to stencil their address on the side of the toter.

Additional toters can be purchased for $85 for the 95-gallon toter or $75 for the 65-gallon toter.

Additional toters can also be rented for $2.50 a month. Trash cans not provided by Rumpke are permitted but the cans must include a lid.

Residents may also request a smaller, red recycling container.

After July 1, residents can contact Rumpke at 859-472-7339  to have large items such as mattresses, furniture and appliances picked up. Mattresses, bed springs and furniture must be wrapped in plastic.

Twice a year, Rumpke will offer city-wide curb side pick-up of large items.

The city, as well as Rumpke, plan an extended education and outreach effort to inform residents about the new contract and change in services. City Manager Tom Fromme will be sending a letter on the changes to all city residents, and city officials plan to visit neighborhood meetings to discuss the changes.

Rumpke has also agreed to provide recycling education programs to students in the Newport Independent Schools.

“Education is paramount,” said Mayor Jerry Peluso. “We have to let people know how this is going to work.”

For more information residents are encouraged to contact City Manager Fromme at 859-292-3687, or Public Works Director Doug Roell at 859-912-2541 or droell@newportky.gov.
