President Donald J. Trump announced his intent to nominate Amul R. Thapar of Kentucky to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
The nomination goes to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
Thapar, son of Indian-American immigrants, serves on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
With his 2008 appointment by President George W. Bush and subsequent confirmation, Judge Thapar became our nation’s first South Asian Article III judge.
Amul Thapar
Prior to his service on the bench, he was the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Before that, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Ohio and the District of Columbia.
He began his legal career in private practice following clerkships with Judge S. Arthur Spiegel on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and then with Judge Nathaniel R. Jones of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Judge Thapar received his B.S. from Boston College in 1991 and his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
