Newport Aquarium in the running for tops in the country; supporters can cast one vote each day

Newport Aquarium is hoping to make some big waves on a national scale.

The Aquarium is in the running again this year for USA Today’s Top 10 Best Aquariums in the country. It has been nominated into the Top 20 by a panel of experts in zoos and family travel, and now it’s up to fan votes to help it reach the top spot.

NKyTribune readers can help by casting their vote for Northern Kentucky’s aquarium each day through the end of the contest.

There are only a few weeks left to vote and Newport Aquarium is currently ranked fourth, behind Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg,Tennessee. The Dallas World Aquarium in Dallas and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

This description from the contest website highlights some of Newport Aquarium’s attractions:

Encompassing a million gallons of water and thousands of animals from around the world, the Newport Aquarium operates the first shark ray breeding program in the world. The Amazon Tunnel allows visitors to walk along the floor of the Amazon River during its flooded season, while the Dangerous & Deadly exhibit showcases some of the world’s most lethal aquatic creatures. Eight species of crocodiles from four different continents can be seen at Gator Alley – one of the most diverse crocodilian collections in the country.

The winners will be announced Friday, March 31.
