Boys’ basketball district playoffs: Ludlow makes 16 fouls shots in final quarter of get past Villa Madonna

Ludlow scored 16 of its 20 points at the free throw line in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 54-48 win over Villa Madonna in the opening game of the 34th District boys’ basketball tournament on Monday at Lloyd High School.

The Panthers had a 34-31 lead going into the final quarter and made 16 of 23 free throws to extend its winning margin to six points. They finished with a 21-12 scoring advantage at the line.

Ludlow senior guard Zac Paul, who scored 12 points in the first half, made his final three foul shots and finished with a team-high 17 points. The Panthers’ other senior guard, T.C. Eads, had 14 points, going 6-for-10 at the line.

Villa Madonna senior guard Thomas Schutzman, who was voted Division III Player of the Year by local coaches, scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to keep his team in the game despite foul trouble.  One of his teammates fouled out and four others had four fouls when the game ended.

The game’s other double-figure scorers were Ludlow junior guard Justin Blackburn and Villa Madonna senior forward Will Martin with 10 points each.

Ludlow will play Dixie Heights, the top-seeded team in the 34th District, in a semifinal game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

DAYTON 61, BELLEVUE 49

Dayton senior forward Draven Garcia scored 28 points, including five 3-point goals, to lead his team to the first-round victory in the 36th District playoffs at Dayton.

Garcia buried four 3-point shots in the second quarter when the Greendevils took a 31-27 lead. They extended the margin to 44-34 going into the fourth quarter and made 10 of 14 free throws in that period to remain in control.

A total of 44 fouls where called in the game and the two teams took 44 free throws. Dayton was 14-of-21 at the line while Bellevue went 16-of-23.  The Tigers’ leading scorer was junior guard  Brett Maehren, who made 13 of 14 fouls shots and finished with 20 points.

Dayton advances to the district semifinals and plays Newport Central Catholic, the defending district and 9th Region champion, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

BOONE COUNTY 91, HERITAGE 24

Boone County took a 31-7 lead in the first quarter of the 33rd District game and the Rebels continued to pull away with 13 of the team’s 14 players scoring points.

The top two scorers for the Rebels were juniors Raymond Rodgers with 21 points and Ethan Robbins with 17. They both did all of their scoring in the first half. Heritage made four 3-point goals to account for half of its total with eighth-grader Judah Chaffey sinking three treys.

Boone County will play Cooper in a district semifinal game at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the Rebels’ home court. Cooper won both regular-season games between the county rivals by margins of 12 and 13 points.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN 47, SILVER GROVE 40

Calvary Christian’s 17-5 scoring advantage at the free throw line was a major factor in the opening game of the 37th District playoffs at Campbell County Middle School.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars made 11 fouls shots during a 16-10 run that secured the victory. Senior forward Justin Wade scored 12 of his game-high 16 points at the foul line, sinking 7-of-8 in fourth quarter.

Adonis Riley and Mason Rusch each had 12 points for the Cougars. Riley made all four of the team’s 3-point goals. The only double-figure scorer for Silver Grove was was senior Nathan Doyle with 10.

Calvary Christian will play Campbell County in a district semifinal game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
