The 6-foot-7 sophomore scored a game-high 15 points with 10 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Bearcats to the victory. Junior forward Zach Clinkenbeard contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

A game between the two teams earlier this season went into overtime before Walton-Verona escaped with a 55-53 victory. In Saturday’s game, the Bearcats took a 23-12 led in the first half and led the rest of the way.

Gallatin County’s only double-figure scorer was senior Mason Wilson with 14 points, six below his season average. It was the first time this season that his team was held to less than 40 points.

Miles, senior Evan Anderson and sophomore Kam Pardee were the other Walton-Verona players named to the regional all-tournament team. The Bearcats will play their first-round game in the Kentucky All “A” Classic state tournament on Thursday, Jan 26 against the winner of the 12th Region playoffs that begin on Monday.

The 9th Region boys’ tournament will also begin on Monday with three 7 p.m. games — Heritage at Dayton, Lloyd at Beechwood and Bellevue at Ludlow. The rest of the tournament games will be played at Ludlow High School next week with the championship game set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

NICHOLAS COUNTY 36, BROSSART 24 — 10th Region All “A” Classic girls championship

After scoring 51 points or more in its first three 10th Region All “A” Classic games, the Brossart girls’ basketball team struggled on offense in a 36-24 loss to Nicholas County in the championship game on Saturday at Paris High School.

The Mustangs were limited to six field goals — all 3-pointers — and six free throws during the game and they did not come close to matching their 47.3 season scoring average.  The team’s leading scorer was senior guard Megan Seiter with 11 points. She was named to the all-tournament team along with her sister, Maria.

In the first half, Brossart made only two field goals and committed 15 turnovers to fall behind, 22-11, at the break. Nicholas County extended its lead to 29-14 before the Mustangs made a comeback and got to within 30-24 on a 3-point basket by Olivia Schultz early in the fourth quarter. But Brossart did not score during the final seven minutes of the game.
