The Gateway Community and Technical College speech team took home several awards from the Dec. 2 and 3, WYRD Invitational Tournament at Transylvania University, winning nine individual awards.

Abby Dyer place 6th in Informative Speaking. Katie Curry placed third in Dramatic Interpretation and sixth in Programed Oral Interpretation. Katie Daniels won first place in Impromptu Storytelling (the largest event at the tournament) and placed fifth in Poetry Interpretation.

Katie Curry and Katie Daniels placed third in Duo Interpretation. They also teamed up and competed in NPDA Debate for the first time and made quite a strong impression. Katie Curry won fifth place Novice Speaker in NPDA, and Katie Daniels won first place Novice Speaker in NPDA. As a team, they advanced to the quarterfinals in NPDA Debate, quite accomplishment considering it was their first time competing in the event and given that novice and varsity teams were competing against each other in the same pool.

The team placed third in Overall Sweepstakes.

“I was exceptionally happy with the results, not only because we did so well across the board, but because we did so well in events in which the team members were competing in for the first time,” said Gateway director of forensics and associate professor, Randy DeBerry.

“This really showed the dedication of our students and the pride they have in representing Gateway at these events.”
