Bloodhorse reports that Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos has died following emergency surgery


BLOODHORSE has reported in a story by Claire Novak that Monarchos has died following emergency surgery to repair a ruptured intestine.

He was 18.

Monarchos was bred in Kentucky by J.D. Squires, purchased by John Oxley, and won the Kentucky Derby in 2001.

He stood at Nuckols Farm in Midway, where he died.

He showed signs of internal discomfort on Oct. 21 and had emergency surgery to repair a ruptured intestine. He was not strong enough to survive, Charles Nuckols III told Bloodhorse.

He sired 512 foals and 349 have raced to date. His 244 winners earned more than 419 million.
