You’re invited to Community ReSoup dinner, discussion on Sunday — eat healthy and share ideas

Residents of Covington are invited to a Community ReSoup dinner in Orchard Park on Sunday, September 25. The event will run from 5-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Initiated by The Center for Great Neighborhood’s (The Center) Artist in Residence, Calcagno Cullen, the event will take an artistic and creative approach to community building and information gathering.

Hosted by The Center, LiveWell NKY, The Northern Kentucky Incubator Kitchen, and COV10, the unique community eating event will include a soup dinner for up to 600 attendees, art making, and community discussion.

Tables for the event will be set up around Orchard Park, each covered in butcher paper containing a series of questions about nutrition, food, and health in Covington that intend to spur conversation.

Attendees will be encouraged to share thoughts and feelings by writing and drawing on the tables, answering questions such as, “What recipe do you remember by heart? Share it here,” “What food do you wish was available in your neighborhood,” and more.

The responses will be used by Cullen to help lead the next phase of The Center’s Freshlo initiative, a program that serves to guide the evolution of Covington’s food system.

Two producers from the Northern Kentucky Incubator Kitchen, The Pickled Pig and Passion in my Pans, will prepare the meal, which will be created from ‘rescued’ foods and produce. Organizers worked with local farmers to secure the produce that will go into making the soup. Blue Oven Bakery is donating bread, which will accompany the meal.

In addition to dinner and discussion, attendees will hear ideas for creating positive change in Covington through nutrition and local healthy foods from community members who are participating in a Healthy Quick Pitch competition.

Dinner guests will vote on their favorite ideas, with the top two receiving up to $500 in funding from LiveWell Covington and Covington’s Nutrition Action Team. Attendees will also have a chance to learn about and get involved with all of LiveWell Covington’s Action Teams: Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Cessation.

The Community ReSoup and Healthy Quick Pitch competition are part of The Center’s efforts to use food-oriented creative placemaking to spur conversations about nutrition, healthy eating, local food, and community in partnership with The Kresge Foundation and LiveWell NKY.
