Northern Kentucky University to host Ohio Association of Economists and Political Scientists meeting

As the presidential election nears, Ohio’s top political and economic experts will convene at Northern Kentucky University this month to discuss issues such as the role of race in the campaign, global economics, the gender wage gap, and more.

nku-logoThe Ohio Association of Economists and Political Scientists (OAEPS) will hold its annual meeting at NKU on Sept. 23 and 24. The professional organization of economists, political scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students compiles and disseminates research related to the economy and politics.

“NKU is pleased to host this conference to spotlight emerging research at NKU and across Ohio in the fields of political science and the economy, and to convene experts around issues related to the presidential election and other current affairs,“ said Dr. Shauna Reilly, associate professor of political science at NKU and OAEPS vice president.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Daniel Carroll, the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland research economist whose work focuses upon macroeconomics, public finance, and political economy. His current work studies the implications of progressive income taxation for the distributions of wealth and income.

On Friday, a panel discussion will also spotlight the topic of “Race and the 2016 Election.”

Panelists include NKU’s Dr. Steven Weiss, Dr. Michael Washington and Dr. Ryan Salzman; the University of Cincinnati’s Dr. Omotayo Banjo; and Dey Diaz of the Cincinnati Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. That event will be held in the Landrum Academic Center and is open to the public.

On Saturday, a series of panel discussions will address issues such as the presidential election, race in politics, the influence of social media upon politics, global economics, trade and employment, leadership, and local elections. The research of NKU faculty, undergraduate and graduate students will be presented throughout the conference.
