Newton’s early goal fuels Norse attack as NKU women get soccer shut out over Morehead State

Senior midfielder Katelyn Newton handed NKU a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 20th minute on Monday night and the Norse never looked back, holding Morehead State to a single shot on goal en route to posting a 1-0 shutout at NKU Soccer Stadium.

The win was NKU’s first of the season as the Norse improve to 1-3-0 while the Eagles dip to 1-2-0.

“It’s been a really terrific group to coach, and starting the season 0-3 was a little bit challenging because the spirit is great, the work ethic is great and the senior leadership is fantastic, so we feel like we have a lot of great pieces that just didn’t come together for us in the first few games,” said head coach Bob Sheehan. “We are obviously thrilled to get the win, Katelyn had a great goal and just stayed with it, and what a big save by Emily Lohmann to keep the score at 1-0 on Morehead State’s penalty kick.”

“In practice this week, we really made it a point to focus on being aggressive and attacking the ball. Coming in, we wanted to be the team to set the tone at the beginning of the game, and I think we were able to do that. It was a great team win,” said Newton.

Newton fired an initial shot from 10 yards out that was blocked by a Morehead State defender. The senior gathered the rebound and deposited a goal into the bottom right of the goal for the game-winner.

Lohmann posted her first career shutout, coming through with a key save off a Morehead State penalty kick in the 48th minute.
The sophomore goalkeeper helped anchor a back line that held the Eagles to six total shots and just one shot on goal, which came via the penalty kick.

NKU was aggressive early, managing nine of their 15 total shots in the opening stanza while the Eagles posted just two shots in the first frame.
Just nine minutes after Newton’s marker, Jessica Frey gained possession of the ball out in front of the MSU defense and dribbled into a one-on-one situation with the MSU goalkeeper who dove for a save.

The second half started with Lohmann’s diving save on a penalty kick to set the tone for the half.
In the 86th minute, Erin Sutton fired a shot from the close right wing that deflected off the far post.
With two minutes to play, MSU stormed into the offensive third and bobbled the ball inside the box, but it was cleared by the Norse before the Eagles could manage a shot.
