Northern Kentucky golfer Wetherill qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship

Northern Kentucky men’s golfer Matthew Wetherill qualified for the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday at The Camargo Club.

After starting the qualifier 3-over through the first four holes, the rising senior on NKU’s men’s golf team recovered with four birdies and nothing worse than par the rest of the first trip around Camargo en route to a 69. He followed with a 70 in the second round to finish at 1-under and in the top three to earn a coveted spot in the U.S. Amateur.

Over the course of the 36-hole event, Wetherill posted seven birdies and just five holes above par.

Wetherill participated in 10 events for the Norse last year, averaging 76.81 strokes through 27 total rounds.

“I am extremely proud of Matt and excited for the opportunity he has ahead of him,” said Daryl Landrum, Northern Kentucky head coach. “He’ll be going head-to-head against the best amateurs in the U.S. and that will be such a great experience for him. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come from Matt during his final year as a Norse.”

The 2016 U.S. Amateur will be played in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, at the Oakland Hills Country Club from Aug. 15-21.

Wetherill will first take to the tee box for the matchplay event on Wednesday, Aug. 17. FOX Sports 1 will have live coverage of the event from 3-6 p.m. that day. The rest of the event will be carried on either FS1, USGA.org or FOX.
