Citi grant supports Redwood’s summer program, new technology for school age children with disabilities

Local employer Citi has recently awarded a $5,000 grant to Redwood in support of Redwood’s Summer Program, which serves school age children with disabilities.

The grant has enabled Redwood to purchase new technology resources used to support Summer Program clients through Redwood’s Assistive Technology Resource Center.

Redwood’s mission to provide enriching educational services to children and adults with disabilities aligns with Citi’s community impact strategy, which focuses on charitable giving to organizations providing educational services from “cradle to career.”

Citi’s generous contribution has funded Redwood’s acquisition of new iPads, iPad cases, applications, and program supplies which are used to introduce the children to new technologies and encourage the learning of new skills.  Citi, the global bank, employs 2700 people in its operations site in Florence.

One of the supporting applications purchased with Citi’s grant teaches the children how to count coins, spend money, and make change.  Another supporting application allows the children to create and print personalized picture books about their Redwood Summer Camp experiences.

‘’This is a great opportunity for our children and youth who are non-verbal to demonstrate their knowledge on particular subjects by putting together their own story books of events, places and activities. Adding pictures and vocabulary to their own books encourages the use of vocabulary and builds their confidence and self-esteem on trying new tasks,” said Katrina Proud, Director, Children’s Services at Redwood.

Redwood’s Summer Program for Children currently serves 50 youth from Kenton, Boone and Campbell counties in Northern Kentucky.  For more information about Redwood, please visit www.redwoodnky.org.
