Northern Kentucky motorists that use the AA Highway (KY 9) in Pendleton County should be aware of a construction project that begins Wednesday, June 29.

Crews will be working during daytime hours.  Motorists should watch for flaggers, crews, equipment and lane closures during this project and delays should be anticipated.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 office has issued the following statement regarding the project:

Construction crews will begin on a chip-seal (scrub seal) project on KY 9 (AA Highway) in Pendleton County on Wednesday, June 29.

“The chip seal process has a lot of benefits,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6, in Covington, “It protects and seals the surface from weather, it’s low cost, increases surface friction and has shorter traffic interruptions to motorists.”

The Chip-Seal will be on a four mile section of KY 9 (AA Highway) in Pendleton County; from county line to county line.  All the work will take place during daytime hours.

Chip-Seal is a different kind of pavement surface from asphalt and concrete.  The application process is first, an asphalt solution called emulsion is sprayed on the surface.  Next course stone is spread evenly over the emulsion completely covering it.

The aggregate is then properly embedded using heavy rolling equipment over several passes.  After allowing adequate time for open traffic to further seat the material.  This step takes 30 days so it might seem likemotorists are driving on a fine gravel road, but actually, motorists are helping compress the aggregates into place.

After the 30 days, a sealing coat is applied and locks in any loose aggregate.  This is the first time this procedure has been done in District 6.

Strawser Construction, of Hamilton, Ohio was awarded the $276,847 contract for this project.

The completion date for the project is August 31, 2016.
