Stephen Ramsay has spent the past decade studying alternatives to wellness and dealing with stress. It wasn’t until a year ago he decided to take a closer look at his future possibilities.

“I’ve always been interested in things that are off the beaten path,” Ramsay said. “I have an open mind about things and I feel like there are things that need to be learned and discovered within the confines of what we’re used to.”

Ramsay, the owner of the Lexington Center for Integrative Health, is a retired pediatrician and opened his most recent center this past April at 465 East High Street in Lexington. A venture operated by Ramsay and his wife Kathy, was developed to offer “non-traditional” alternatives to wellness and stress management.

“It’s exciting, different and fun,” Ramsay said. “It’s the natural way to approach things and people feel the difference there. I don’t practice medicine here and I don’t do doctor stuff here at all. I like the idea of empowering people to take charge of their own health and become an active participant in that process.”

Ramsay said dealing with his own personal health issues played a role in learning more about alternative treatments.

“I had been through some traditional ways (of treatment) without any benefit and I was looking for things in that non-traditional realm,” he said. “I started learning about some things and the benefits (of alternative treatment). Those (treatments) are out there and people need to at least know about them and choose how to take care of themselves.”

The center offers various therapy approaches to help deal with reducing stress while enhancing energy. On-site treatments include infra-red sauna therapy, L.I.F.E. System Biofeedback, Scalar Wave Field Therapy, PEMF Therapy, Frequency Specific Micro-Current treatment and Whole Body Vibration. Ramsay and his staff also offer Laser Pain and Inflammation Therapy and Massage Therapy.

“We had a desire to bring some health-oriented therapies to Central Kentucky that had largely not been here before,” he said. “We studied several modalities oriented to health support on a cellular energy level. Every cell has energy to it, like a cellular powerhouse and those energies have to be balanced and healthy for the cell to function properly. Our goal here is to work on that level (of wellness) and help the body be restored to a healthier state. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal and oftentimes when we get rid of things that interfere with healing, the body can do some healing of its own.”

“I like it when people come and they feel good about being here. They recognize there is something good about de-stressing and something good about that effort toward helping the body do what it's supposed to do in a natural fashion."

The Scalar Wave Field Therapy room is the first of its kind in Kentucky. The system generates “multiple bio-active life energy fields, including scalar waves.” The treatment aids in cell regeneration, improves immune function, provides relief from pain, detoxifies the body, elevates mood and assists in balancing brain hemispheres.

“Very few people know about (the alternatives) and only people who have used (the treatments) have any idea what they’re for,” Ramsay said. “We had a goal of bringing things that were valuable and people didn’t know about and put it in a place and an atmosphere and presentation to where it’s worth knowing about.”

Ramsay said the treatments help provide a “balance” between traditional chemical treatment, exercise, and dieting.

“We don’t have things here that cure things, but they promote the body’s natural system for health and wellness,” Ramsay said. “That’s what we do.”

Since opening his doors, Ramsay has been pleased with the response he’s received in the past two months.

“I like it when people come and they feel good about being here,” he said. “They recognize there is something good about de-stressing and something good about that effort toward helping the body do what it’s supposed to do in a natural fashion.”
