“The purpose of Aviation Day is to spotlight the Capital City Airport and give folks an opportunity to come out and see the wide variety of aircraft that fly in here,” airport Assistant Director Scott Shannon said. “We’ll have civilian, private and military aircraft on display.”

In addition to seeing aircraft up close, free airplane rides will be available for youths 8 – 17 years old. Flights for adults will also be available for a donation to the Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund.

Attendees can also participate in various activities including the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety’s D2 Driving Simulator, the Kentucky State Police’s (KSP) Drug Abuse Education Trailer and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority’s (KHEAA) College Info Road Show. The Frankfort High School Chapter of the Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education will also participate. Local fire and police departments will have their vehicles on display.

“These programs are part of the many organizations and vendors that will participate in this year’s Aviation Day,” Shannon said.

Admission and parking are free.

I wish this special event was covered better on the media. I picked up on it on aviationkey.org. Since I was in the National Guard from 1960 to 1967 and a private pilot with a great grandson 9 years old this event was made for me. Free rides for kids his age what better way to promote aviation in the state of Kentucky. Once again we need to reach many more to make it a success.
