NKU Provost Ott Rowlands to reprise ‘Mud Nostalgia’ Lecture on campus as part of Six@Six

The story of a play. That’s what Northern Kentucky University Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Sue Ott Rowlands will tell as she reprises a lecture about “Mud Nostalgia,” a one-woman play that she commissioned and has performed around the world.
 
The lecture was originally prepared for NKU’s Six@Six series, and delivered at the Mercantile Library in Cincinnati. But Ott Rowlands wanted to offer it on campus, as well, especially for students.
 
The lecture will be on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 2 – 3:30 p.m., at the George and Ellen Rieveschl Digitorium in Griffin Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. You can make them online here. Doors will open at 1:45 p.m.
 
During the lecture, Ott Rowlands will step in and out of character as she explores her collaboration with playwright Mark Evans Bryan in conceiving “Mud Nostalgia,” her experiences in performing the play, and the challenges the role brings.
 
The talk will especially appeal to students and faculty interested in the collaborative, creative process but also to those interested in the themes and issues woven into the play, including faith, marriage, abuse, and personal triumph.
 
“Mud Nostalgia” is a powerful play that explores the rich tradition of Appalachia through the unique spiritual traditions of the mountain holiness religions, specifically the serpent-handling churches. Blending music, movement, and narrative, Ott Rowlands brings to life the story of a young holiness woman struggling to understand her life and her faith in light of a devastating act of betrayal.
 
There will be three opportunities to see the play next month at NKU’s Corbett Theater, March 26-28. Tickets for the play can be ordered through the Corbett Theater here.
